I have a trouble with the syntax - and appreciate any help.

When people type http://newdomain/dir1 I want to redirect to http://olddomain/dir1

dir1 doesn't exist on the newdomain server.

Usually our customers preffer proxying in this case. Please specify if it is 301-redirect or proxy.

I am not sure what is the difference - I was able to make the following syntax work -

#RewriteEngine on
#RewriteBase /
#RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^egovwebstg\.marinpublic\.com$ [NC] #RewriteRule ^bos$ http://www.co.marin.ca.us/bos [R=301,L]

The syntax above is using the 301 redirect right?  What would be the syntax for proxying and what is the advantages...

In case you use 301-redirect, you go to a new site and in browser you see other domain.
In case you use proxy, you remain at the same address, but deliver content from other server.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^egovwebstg\.marinpublic\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^bos$ http://www.co.marin.ca.us/bos [NC,P,L]
