We have this issue cropping up sporadically ever since we installed the new Helicon Ape product. There were no such problems with ISAPI_Rewrite but we were not able to install that on our new 64 bit operating system.

Once a month or thereabouts, mod_rewrite suddenly stops working. For example today one of our key client sites has died because of this.

This rule DOES work:

RewriteRule . - [F]

But NO OTHER rewrite rules work any more. The .htaccess file has not been modified in any way for about six months.

For example this rewrite rule NO LONGER WORKS as of 1:30pm today:

RewriteRule ^sales/recent$ /sales/recent.aspx

There are no errors reported in error.log.

rewrite.log is completely empty.

How can we bring our sites back online?

PS:

Things we have tried which have not worked.

Restarting IIS.

Restarting the web site.

Rebooting the entire server.

Restarting the app pool the sites are running in.

Downloading the latest version of Helicon Ape (version 3.0.0.59). All this achieved was crashing ALL our web sites. Helicon please explain: why is there no documentation saying that you need to update all your web.config when you install an update?

More information: this problem is only affecting the sites we have running in one app pool which is running in classic mode. Sites running  in other app pools (classic or integrated) are unaffected and are still up and running.
