we post links that look like this on facebook:

However, it appears that facebook is now adding a query parameter to the URL.  it now looks like this

we currently have a rule in our httpd.ini that says if the URL after the domain is not exactly 12 characters in length to redirect them to a page that says the URL is not valid.  Since facebook is tagging the extra parameter to the end of our URL, it is causing the rule to activate.  is there any way to tell it to ignore this specific parameter of "?ref=nf"?

RewriteRule .*/([a-z,0-9]){12,12}/$ /default.aspx?gmid=$1 [I,L]
RewriteRule .*/([a-z,0-9]{12,12})$ /default.aspx?gmid=$1 [I,L]

please try using the following:

RewriteRule (.*)\?ref=nf $1 [I,R,L]
RewriteRule .*/([a-z,0-9]){12,12}/?$ /default.aspx?gmid=$1 [I,L]
